The single piece solution which the extrusion process provides holds particular advantages over fabricated cylinders in terms of performance, integrity and aesthetics.

  

Hollow Extrusions have been involved in the production of extruded and finish machined hydraulic cylinders for a number of years.

We can produce from a range of carbon based steels including 060A17, 150M28 and 150M36. Cylinders are typically finish machined and ready to be placed directly onto an assembly line. We can provide significant technical support to the customer including design assistance and metallurgical information, including a range of materials testing.

 

MANUFACTURING METHOD

Billet Preparation:

Peeled round bars are cut to specified lengths and a chamber and chamfering operation is carried out to help improve concentricity.

Extrusion:

The billet is then heated in the controlled environment of a heat inductor and then extruded on one of two major presses. In most cases the extrusion is then hot drawn through a series of dies immediately afterwards.

Cold Drawing:

The hot drawn piece is then cleaned and lubricated before being worked further through a cold drawing operation. This provides further control of mechanical properties and allows for tighter tolerances to be maintained.

The resulting parts can then be trimmed, machined and/or honed to customer requirements. The cylinders are then ready for the assembly line.

QUALITY

A significant revamping of the Quality Department has been focused on attaining the ISO 9001 2000 standard. This has had significant benefits in all areas of the business where the importance of Continuous Improvement and Customer Satisfaction is well recognised. The result has been a 50% reduction in internal scrap.

We can provide a broad range of materials testing, offering a level of confidence and traceability which is critical in defence products. Alongside this assurance of quality we offer design assistance and technical support to ensure that our process is best utilised to supply the customer's requirements.
