Project Recovery

Why do some projects fail?

Deep-end or instinct based management

Often, people are appointed to manage a project because they have excellent skills in other key areas of the project such as analysis, design or programming. Sadly, it does not always follow that they will be effective project managers.

Scope-creep

This is when the project expands beyond its original planned or agreed scope. It may be due to changing business needs, the introduction of new processes or lack of an accurate (or feasible) specification. Scope creep is typical of long-duration or multi-ownership projects. It is also often associated with delayed-start projects.

Cost overrun

May be a consequence of scope-creep, over-optimistic or inadequate planning, changing market conditions or an attempt to meet deadlines through increasing the size of the project team. Again this is typical of long-duration projects.

Resourcing issues

Could be due to loss of key team members or skills from the project team or organisation. It might also indicate a need for training or re-skilling team members.

Business changes

For example, mergers or acquisitions resulting in radical project overhauls, decisions to outsource departmental functions, introduction of new or changed business practices etc.

So, what can you do about it?

What do you do when it becomes apparent that the project is slipping out of control?

  • "Axe the project - no sense in good money chasing bad "

  • "We've come this far, can't throw away what we've already invested - got to see it through to the (bitter?) end "

  • "Replace the team members / manager - it must be their fault ...mustn't it? "

...Not necessarily

A 'knee-jerk' reaction may only serve to turn a bad situation into an impossible one.

Clearly, strong leadership and prompt, decisive action will be required - but only after a considered, objective and unbiased appraisal of all of the facts.
